Veli Albert Kallio, a Finnish scientist and Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society[1] who lives in Great Britain, is "one of the region's leading ice experts"[2] and has been tracking earthquakes and glacial ice quakes in the northwest of Greenland that he attributes to the isostatic rebound caused by the reduced weight (due to melting) of glaciers on tectonic plates, allowing the plates to move more easily.[3][4][5]
In 2005 Kallio launched the Frozen Isthmuses Protection Campaign of the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans (FIPC) and led an international movement to regulate ice-reducing shipping practices. He is a vice-president of the Sea Research Society[6] and a scientific ambassador of the Environmental parliament, a UK-based community environmental action group.[7]
Kallio has created controversy by warning of flooding of coastal cities like London, New York, Mumbai, and Shanghai[8] and of coming world food supply shortages, which he believes will result from rising sea levels caused by Global Warming.[9][10]
